OH, THAT GOD WOULD COME DOWN!
Isaiah 64
1. v. 1-3: Our desire - God's presence.
What happens in God's presence?
- Shaking (Ex. 19:18-20; Heb. 12:25-29)
- Fire: - to burn up trash (Matt. 3:12)
- to boil water (Rev. 3:15-16)
- God's Name Known (Josh. 2:9-11)
- Nations Tremble (Ps. 46:10)
- Awesome, Unexpected Things (Eph. 3:20)
2. v. 4-5: Our action - To wait on the Lord.
We see here - this is not a passive waiting. While waiting, we are to be rejoicing, doing righteousness, and walking in God's ways.
3. v. 5-6: Our need - to be saved from sin.
God's presence exposes our sin. (Is. 6:5; John 3:20)
This need is continual - Rom. 7:14-25.
Awareness of this need is essential to keep out pride and overconfidence in self. "The degree to which we allow impurities in our lives is the degree to which we hinder the outpouring of God's Spirit upon us and the working of the Spirit through us."
4. v. 7: Our response - to stir ourselves up to pray. (Matt. 26:41; Col. 4:2; Is. 62:6-7)
5. v. 8-9: Our outcome - to become vessels of God.
(2 Cor. 4:7; 2
Tim. 2:20-21)
